Known worldwide as the Mecca Of Music the centralized area of England
called ‘The Midlands’ is where eyes turn when looking to stay ahead of
the curve ‘on the scene’, are seeking out the latest sound or band
pricking playlists and turning heads in the direction of
something…grand.
Having spent the previous twelve months slathering the unsigned scene
and stages with their own senses shattering consumptive sounds
Birmingham’s own Piper’s of the Pied five-piece Nishi has earned
their place on the iPods of their global audience with three previously
released singles gaining global airplay.
Collected together and complemented by a further two new tracks,
the Droog Addict EP represents their invitation to your ears and place
on your ‘Pods with an opening salvo of a watershed in the happening.
Priding ourselves with the burden that is being at the forefront of music
we steadied ourselves against the guard rails as we stared over the curve,
tracked down and sat down and spoke with one half of the infamous
Droog Addict pairing, guitarist Bruce Oakley…
#1. LADIM: The beginning is where we traditionally start so please;
introduce yourself..?
Bruce: I go by many names, but to protect the innocent I’ll use the
acquired pseudonym ‘Bruce’.
#2. LADIM:With the launch of your debut EP Droog Addict Nishi are
finally staking their claim on the music world, with quite a large
hammer to drive the point home.?
Bruce: We think it’s the perfect time to release our debut EP, we would
have waited a few albums down the line but it defies convention. After
crafting our art on the well worn & occasionally oiled machine that is
original music, we think that the collection we have here is the perfect
encapsulation of our tried and tested methodologies to make merry in
our earholes. The songs have been whittled down to near perfection in
our eyes, let’s hope our baying fans agree.
#3. LADIM:Of the five tracks on offer you capture the breadth of human
emotion – from paranoia and greed to heart-break and unfulfilled resolution –
expressing a band very much of the one mind in its expression and
understanding of the tone their affecting..?
Bruce: Rather than patronize our audience with simplified lyrics and
cheesy subject matter we thought it right to head down a darker and
more realistic, emotionally fuelled direction. Because life isn’t all about
wanting to be a rockstar or simply having ‘A bad day’. The tracks show
our musical influences in a subtle and clever way that makes people
really listen.
#4. LADIM:Having started so strongly the momentum behind Nishi is
gathering apace; why do you feel your fans have become so taken with
the band..?
Bruce: With most of us being from previous bands, we felt like we all
needed to try something new and interesting that maybe people didn’t
expect at first. The main reaction from many fans was ‘I wasn’t expecting
this!’ by which they meant they expected a more run of the mill ‘hard
rock/ metal’ influence. Instead they got an insightfully worded social
commentary with a dirty backing track complete with odd time signatures
and the occasional bass break-down(sorry folks, blame Jim).
#5. LADIM:Nishi are also showing their altruistic side along with their
artistic one, appearing at a charity event in aid of MS..?
Bruce: This next gig is going to be our first one of the provinces.
Although not an obvious choice for us to play, it is new territory and
of course, all for a good cause. Tickets can be obtained from the grubby
hands of any of the band members. Simply ask via Facebook or Twitter
and we’ll gladly comply. One moment, Sir Bob Geldoff is on the phone….
#6. LADIM: If you had to pick just one track of the EP above all others to
turn up to 11 first, which would it be and why..?
Bruce:I think the stand out track is CottonMouth; it has so many musical
layers and the vocals bounce around like a stripper on a rodeo. A strong
rhythm section is the basis for this little gem and you’ll be tapping your hands
and clapping your feet before you can say “notinmyday!”
#7. LADIM: And finally, it’s Shameless Self-Promotions Time!!! What else
would you like our readers to know about Nishi and the upcoming
Droog Addict release?
Bruce: During the long and arduous recording I lost several picks that
will never be retrieved. After seeking legal advice I am now entitled to
a full refund of £1.63 in new pence.
Also: I hope people will get our not-so-subtle nod towards cult film
culture with our EP title. Enough said, Droogies.
